  • Quotation mark

Quotation marks, also called quotes, quote marks, quotemarks, speech marks and inverted commas, are punctuation marks used in pairs in various writing systems to set off direct speech, a quotation, or a phrase. The pair consists of an opening quotation mark and a closing quotation mark, which may or may not be the same character.

Quotation marks have a variety of forms in different languages and in different media.

    History

The double quotation mark is older than the single. It derives from a marginal notation used in fifteenth-century manuscript annotations to indicate a passage of particular importance (not necessarily a quotation); the notation was placed in the outside margin of the page and was repeated alongside each line of the passage. By the middle sixteenth century, printers (notably in Basel, Switzerland) had developed a typographic form of this notation, resembling the modern closing or right-hand double quotation mark. During the seventeenth century this treatment became specific to quoted material, and it grew common, especially in Britain, to print quotation marks (now in the modern opening and closing forms) at beginning and end of the quotation as well as in the margin; the French usage (see under Specific language features below) is a survival of this. In most other languages, including English, the marginal marks dropped out of use in the last years of the eighteenth century.

    Cave Story

Cave Story (洞窟物語 Dōkutsu Monogatari) is a freeware platform-adventure video game released in 2004 for the PC. It was developed over five years by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya in his free time. Cave Story features 2D platform mechanics and is reminiscent of the classic games the developer played in his youth, such as Metroid.

After its initial self-published release, Cave Story slowly gained popularity on the Internet. It received wide critical acclaim for its compelling story and gameplay. Independent developer Nicalis worked with Amaya to port the game to WiiWare and DSiWare in 2010. An enhanced version, Cave Story+, was released for Steam in November 2011, with a Nintendo 3DS release in October 2012. A 3D remake of the game, titled Cave Story 3D, was developed by Nicalis and published by NIS America for the Nintendo 3DS in November 2011.

The game focuses on an amnesiac protagonist who awakens in a cave. Through his explorations, he discovers a plot by the Doctor, a megalomaniac who intends to force the inhabitants of the cave to fight for him in his bid to conquer the world. The protagonist is thrust into the position of savior as he endeavors to defeat the Doctor.

    Trench Warfare

    by: Kadath

    Hours of boredom alternating
    With short periods of combat
Sleep with fat rats and vermin
Live an animal and lethargic life
    The front, a formless landscape,
    Shot with smoking craters
In the air, atrocious stench of corpses
    Perpetual battle against the elements
Flows of mud carry away the fillings,
Changing the trench into an icy sewer
    (2x)
    Suddenly bombardment breaks up
    Lacerating shrapnels specially dreaded
    The shell-fire sometimes so violent
After this inferno, gather the dead
Runners carry the reports to the HQ
“Line cleaners” crawl in no-man’s land
Slide into the enemy-lines through the night,
Cut off a throat with the dagger
    Sappers shear the barbed-wire entanglements,
Dig out tunnels under the enemy-lines
Finally the hour of decisive attack
Infantrymen rush out of the trenches
    Trying to penetrate the enemy-device
    Abrupt bursts of gun-fire starting
Thousands of soldiers in the battle,
Only a handful reaching the target
Stab, shoot, hack and kill (3x)
Throw hand-grenades, jump in the trenches
Now starts the massacre, brief and terrible
    (2x)
